In policy-making, understanding the difference between federal and state law is crucial. At its core, federal law creates a consistent nationwide standard, while state law offers the flexibility to cater to local preferences. Dive into the nuances with this insightful resource.

As we advocate for gun safety, this distinction informs our approach. Federal law would unify our approach but states vary in their views on firearm restrictions.  At a time in which federal lawmakers are divided in their support of gun safety policies, state law offers a path forward.

Here's our strategy: While a nationwide standard for common ground policies like universal background checks and combating gun trafficking are ideal, the federal political climate isn't likely to produce major legislative change in the near future. With a divided Congress and the recent enactment of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA), Whitney/Strong’s legislative focus is shifting. The BSCA incentivizes states to enact legislation and bolster infrastructure for community safety. So, while we maintain our ties in Washington D.C. to prepare for a future in which the environment is more ripe for federal change, we're intensifying our efforts to pass common ground legislation at the state level in 2024.
